Owner John Root established SGO Designer Glass of Dayton in 2005 as a division of Cadenza Enterprises, LLC. He wanted to have the ability to offer a unique product, stained glass overlay, alongside traditional stained glass, and found the overlay product to be of exceptional quality and value.

Mr Root grew up surrounded by the arts, fine craftsmanship, and a history of achievement. His mother's family, the Capozzis,emigrated from Salza Irpina, Italy in the early 1900's. His grandfather was a fine shoemaker and his grandmother a wonderful Italian cook. The Roots came from Germany and also settled in the southern Ohio area. The family includes Chicago Cubs famed pitcher Charlie Root, Grandma Root won in the Pillsbury Bakeoff, Grandpa Root was a notable international collector of unique art works, and Mr Root's father was a violinist, artist, and composer.

Mr Root continues that tradition as a stained glass artist, business owner, and musician. He studied music at UCCCM, Indiana, and Julliard. It was in New York city that he also got started in the field of stained glass.Outside the glass studios he plays music with several orchestral and theatre groups and often performs as a violin soloist .
